Botox is the trade name for a drug called onabotulinumtoxinA. Botox is mostly known for its cosmetic application in fighting the effects of aging on the skin. In cosmetics, Botox is used aesthetically to combat the effect of frown lines, crow’s feet (tiny wrinkles around the corner of the eyes) and forehead lines on the face. Botox is a substance that is produced from a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. These bacteria are found naturally in lakes, soil and forests. They produce a toxic chemical that in a high dose can be poisonous. However, scientists have found that by using these chemical in very small amounts, the chemical can be very useful in a variety of situations in the medical world. Botox injections causes weakness to muscles as the chemical blocks nerve signals from transmitting to the muscles. When this happens, the muscles involved do not contract. On the face, Botox injections causes weakness in certain muscles and doesn’t totally paralyze them. Hence, patients can still have facial expressions. What Botox does is that it limits a person from making expressions that leads to the lines and wrinkles we see on the face such as a frown or a grimace. Because of the way Botox works, wrinkles that are caused by gravity and sun damage are not suitable to be fixed by Botox. Always speak to a doctor to seek advice for the appropriate treatment. “I had a great experience! I’ve been going for Botox injections here for almost two years now. I’m on my third injection. I’m always well taken care of before, during and after the injections. Any questions I ask will be answered and that makes me feel at ease.“ “I’m trying to look younger but neither do I want to have that overdone look. I’ve had Botox injections here on the cheeks, forehead, upper lips and between the brows. Have been coming regularly for the past few years for maintenance.“ Here are some Frequently Asked Questions by you, answered by our doctors. The time varies from person to person. Some people see visible changes after two days while others take up to two weeks to notice a difference. On average, it takes a week before someone sees a change. Factors that affect the time for results to be seen include age, the degree of wrinkling and the muscles underneath that are involved in causing the lines. Again, this varies from person to person. On average, Botox injections will last around four to six months. After this period, the effect of Botox in relaxing the facial muscles will start to wear off and the muscles will start contracting again. However, the residual effect of the facial expressions would not be as deep as the muscles have had time to relax. After this period, you are able to receive more injections should you wish to maintain the appearance. The effect of Botox treatment is not permanent. After three to six months, the effect will wear off and the facial muscles start contracting again causing the lines to reappear. However, without Botox the lines would be more severe. After these period, it is generally safe to receive another Botox injections. Injections can be done as many times it is needed as long as it is within a reasonable window of safety to ensure you do not receive too much of the substance at once. Your doctor will be able to advise you on this matter. What are the side effects of botox on cheeks Botox injections on the cheeks carried out by an experienced practitioner and using the recommended dosage is very safe. The most common side effect is temporary bruising at the site of injections. These bruises will resolve on its own without additional treatment. Some people may also experience a headache after the injection that can be treated with simple painkillers. Ptosis or droopy eyelids is another side effect although it is uncommon. This is a result of the muscles maintaining the eyelids in place relaxing. Your doctor may not recommend Botox if you display signs of this possibly happening. However, this side effect will also resolve itself. There are two more serious side effects but is very rare. Firstly, someone may be allergic to the medicine. The severity ranges from skin itching and rashes to trouble breathing. Mild allergies can be treated simply with antihistamines and Botox best be avoided for future uses. However, more severe reactions that affect someone’s breathing or makes them feel unwell should be treated immediately at the hospital. Secondly, there is a theoretical risk of the chemical reaching your central nervous system. If you experience problems speaking, swallowing or breathing after the injections, immediately seek medical help from your nearest hospital. As Botox treatment is almost synonymous with its cosmetic uses, it may surprise you that it has many other uses in the medical field. As it can help to stop muscles contracting, there are many medical conditions in which this is is useful. Botox can be used to treat muscle spasms. When this happens in the neck and shoulder muscles, it is called cervical dystonia. Other muscles spasms or spasticity such as in the upper and lower limbs is also amenable to Botox injections. Eye conditions that can be treated by Botox include a condition where the eyes are not aligned or in conditions when the eyes are blinking uncontrollably. Botox can be used to treat hyperhidrosis which is a condition where a person sweats excessively especially under the armpits. Nerve disorders such as multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries can lead to an overactive bladder and trouble controlling urine. Botox can be injected in the bladder to relax the bladder muscles. Finally, a chronic severe migraine that does not respond to any other might be fixed by Botox. This is not however the recommended treatment for the more common tension headache. The cost of Botox is dependent on the site of the injection and also the required number of injections. In general, the treatment ranges between RM3000 and RM4000.
