Debunking Non-Invasive Surgery – Dr. Jasmine Of Nexus Clinic Answers Our Questions!
You might have heard the term ‘Non-invasive Surgery’ being used rather liberally these days but what does it really mean and what sort of treatments come under this category? To debunk all the myths and fears surrounding non-invasive surgery procedures, we speak to Dr. Jasmine Ruth Yuvarani, aesthetic doctor at Nexus Clinic, Kuala Lumpur.

Could you briefly define non-invasive procedures?
Non-invasive procedures do not require penetration in to the body by cutting or piercing the skin such as Radiofrequency Treatment, Cryoliposis, Cold Electroporesis and LED Phototherapy among others. Minimally invasive procedures include Botulinum Toxin A injections, Dermal Fillers, Lasers, Skin Peels, Hair Transplantation and Implantation, Mesotherapy and Carboxytherapy. Both are non-surgical procedures. The beauty about non-surgical procedures is that the patient doesn’t experience down time or very minimal down-time. Patients can get back to their usual tasks almost immediately.
What is the biggest misconception when it comes to non-invasive procedures?
A lot of patients walk in to the clinic thinking they only need to do a one time procedure to see permanent results. Many of the treatments offered either need multiple sessions, maintenance and/or after care. The aesthetic physicians and consultants need to educate patients that just like perming one’s hair, up keeping a car or simply managing a healthy weight, you would need to constantly make an effort to maintain it.
Do you think plastic surgery is still a taboo in our society as compared to other countries?
There seems to be more acceptance recently especially with a lot of Korean artistes being open about the work they have done. However there are still a big number of Malaysians who rather enhance their natural features than change their face altogether that is why they are more open to aesthetic medicine as compared to plastic surgery.
What are some of your clinic’s most popular treatments?
Weight loss and body sculpting followed by laser treatments, botulinum toxin A, dermal fillers and hair loss in that order.
Are these treatments more popular with men or women? Do you see an increase in male customers?
Most male customers are interested in weight loss and hair loss. Recently we do see an increase in male patients especially seeking treatment for muscle building and body sculpting. They want to see quicker results than going to the gym. The number one treatment for female patients is also weight loss. The next most popular treatment for women is facial enhancements with dermal fillers and botulinum toxin A. You will be surprised that after trying weight loss and hair loss a lot of male patients start to do dermal filler and botulinum toxin A treatments to further enhance their new look. Laser treatments are equally popular among both sexes.
What’s a typical day like for you?
I have a very busy and tight schedule. I try to put in equal amount of time for work and family. Fortunately my 4 kids are early risers – they are up by 6.30am. My weekdays start by taking my kids to the park. Then I get ready for work. If I have time I will throw in a light workout or on days where I feel like I need some pampering I head to the sauna. Work is always enjoyable with challenging and fun patients from all walks of life. Before I head home I go for a run at the nearby park or sometimes bring the kids along with me. I mostly enjoy home cooked food followed by some jazz before heading to bed if I don’t have plans to head out to the philharmonic orchestra with my hubby.
Weekends are a bit different. In the morning, I go for a run with the kids at the KLCC park followed by brunch in popular hotspots like Jalan Alor or tryout foods from the top 20 breakfast spots in KL. On a day with clear skies, we usually just enjoy a picnic at the park itself. In the afternoon my hubby and I will either help out in church related charity activities, catch up with friends or simply catch a movie. In the evening, the family heads out to Aquaria, Lake Titiwangsa or the latest exhibition for kids. My kids especially love anything to do with dinosaurs. After dinner, the family gathers for movie night with Astro Best or Astro First. When the kids are off to bed by 9.30pm, it’s finally time for me to unwind with my husband with a glass of wine while sitting at our balcony watching the amazing KL skyline.
